You can't throw a stone in San Mateo County without meeting a long-time resident who has found memories of and appreciation for Carolyn Livengood. I adjourned in her memory today at the Board of Supervisors meeting. And, it is with gratitude and sadness that I grant her a posthumous Warren Award.
Carolyn was a tenacious journalist with heart and soul. And, she was a tireless volunteer for veterans and veteran causes.
Carolyn was resident of San Bruno since 1948 – and was involved in many activities in the town she called home.
She was also a longtime correspondent for the San Mateo Times, the San Jose Mercury News, the San Mateo Daily Journal and the Patch. She was “old school” – tough and fair, and always got her facts straight. She regularly wrote about veterans and resources for them. Her last column was written in June 2016.
Carolyn’s work with and on behalf of veterans and veterans causes was extraordinary. She was longtime President of the Avenue of the Flags Committee at the Golden Gate National Cemetery, the committee which host the Memorial Day, Veterans Day and Wreaths Across America programs. She generously volunteered her time for the past 25 years with the US Coast Guard Auxilliary, Flotilla 15 at Oyster Point, retiring in 2006 as the Commander.
Not wanting to draw attention to herself, but recognized by our community for her service - Carolyn was honored as the Patriot of the Year in 2016 by the San Mateo County Veterans Commission and was inducted into the Women’s Hall of Fame.
RIP Carolyn – you will be greatly missed.
