  • Meet Carlos Garcia and Nereyda Guzman, the very first young people to be awarded the American Medical Response (AMR) "Save a Life" Scholarship" for young people in District 4. They are enthusiastic, determined and hard-working. This scholarship will make a real and immediate difference in the lives of these two deserving young people and ultimately in the lives of people in our communities.

Brad White, Regional Director of AMR and I worked together to develop this program that will provide two full-ride scholarships to attend the College of San Mateo’s Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Basic Training program, provide a mentor to help them complete the EMT coursework and cover the cost of the examinations for certification. Upon successful completion of the EMT program, AMR intends to offer part-time employment to the scholarship awardees. AMR representatives Kevin Miller and Lloyd Kimbrel met their mentees Carlos and Nereyda today. A great big THANK YOU to AMR!

To be eligible, the scholarship candidates had to reside in District 4 (East Palo Alto, East Menlo Park, North Fair Oaks, and Redwood City), be 18-24 years old, and proficient in spoken and written in English.
