San Mateo County Supervisors to Consider Study for New Energy Purchasing Effort
Supervisors Pine and Groom Push for Community Choice Aggregation Program

WHAT: San Mateo County Supervisors Dave Pine and Carole Groom will seek support for a county-sponsored feasibility study as the first step in the process of forming a local Community Choice Aggregation agency.
Community Choice Aggregation (CCA) is a local energy model established in state law by Assembly Bill 117 (Migden). Community Choice Aggregation allows a local government, or group of agencies to pool the electricity demand of their residential, business, and municipal accounts in order to purchase or develop power on their behalf. Community Choice Aggregation is focused on the power generation side of the energy equation while power delivery, grid maintenance, customer metering/billing, and customer service functions remain with the existing utility. Through CCA, California communities are achieving significant results including:
- Competitive, often cheaper electricity rates
- Consumer choice, where none currently exists
- Significant reductions in GHG emissions
- New renewable power development, local and in-State
- New jobs and energy programs for the community
"Community Choice Aggregation is a proven model for providing clean electric power at competitive rates, reducing green house gas emissions, and developing local renewable power sources," said San Mateo County Supervisor Dave Pine. "
"I'm excited about how many cities want to join us,” said Carole Groom, President of the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors. “This is going to be a very collaborative effort. Getting more renewables in our energy mix is very important to our County."
