  • Collage of photos taken during the 4th Annual Veteran of the Year Luncheon

On November 7th, we held our 4th Annual Veteran of the Year Luncheon. I could not be prouder of our San Mateo County Veterans Commission and the fine work they do for our veterans. This event has increased popularity that this year it was held at a bigger venue in order to have more veterans attend.

With 350 in attendance – half were veterans - highlights included a keynote from United States Coast Guard Vice Admiral Linda Fagan, our honorees Leo McArdle (Veteran of the Year), John Helin (Patriot of the Year) and Jasper Ridge Farm (Enterprise of the Year). But most meaningful were the three World War II veterans who attended – all in their late 90's!

Veteran of the Year, Leo McArdle, is a Vietnam veteran who served in the Army.  Upon his retirement from service, Leo performed over 7,500 military funerals as part of the United States Volunteers of America, bringing comfort to the families of our fallen heroes.

Make sure to watch the short videos for each of the three honorees highlighting their significance to the veteran community here:
